SBL Ride Guidelines
Follow these basic guidelines to make our rides safe and enjoyable for everyone.
Rider Responsibilities

- Make sure that your bicycle is in good
mechanical condition.
- Take basic equipment with you for you and your bike:
- Appropriate clothing
- Helmet
- Suntan lotion/gloves/mirror
- Water bottle(s)
- Snacks
- Spare tube and patch kit
- Tire pump and tire tools
- Quarters (for calls)
- Build up to longer rides, so that you have a
reasonable capability to do the ride.
- During the ride
- Ride in a safe manner:
- Call out road hazards to other riders
- Pass other riders when safe and after
informing them
- Pass other riders on the left, not the right
- Draft only if the other riders agree
- Obey traffic laws.
- Pace yourself to complete the ride.
- Assist other riders where appropriate
(mechanically or emotionally).
- Inform the ride leader if you leave the ride
(they may be looking for you).
- After the ride
- Thank the ride leader. Make any suggestions for improvements in a pleasant manner.
- Join your fellow riders for a pizza :)
Ride Leader Responsibilities
- Prepare a map for the ride
- The map need not be to scale, but mileages should be accurate, turns correct and there should be no errors.
- The map should include sufficient information that, if riders get off the route, they can find their way back or locate a short cut, if necessary.
- Provide enough copies for distribution to all cyclists at the ride.
Socialize
- Introduce yourself to any new riders.
- Assess riders and bicycles for any conditions which may create special situations during the ride.
Conduct a riders' meeting
- Give a safety talk including basic safety rules and reminding riders of the SBL requirement to follow the rules of the road and ride courteously.
- Review rules of group riding practice such as calling out road hazards and informing other riders when passing.
- Comment on the map, noting tricky turns or special hazards
- Conduct the meeting in a manner that reflects the importance of safe, responsible riding.
- Announce any post-ride activities.
- During the ride
- Assist riders with mechanical problems as appropriate.
- Provide for a "sweep" to ride with the slower riders who may need encouragement or assistance
- After the ride
- Make sure everyone is accounted for.
- Go back to check on those who may have struggled on the ride, if necessary.
