The annual SBL Back to the Blue Ridge event is more than a series of bike rides segmented by a few meals, a little socializing, perhaps an adult beverage or two and then crashing for the night to prepare for the next days assault on mind and body. Not so and far otherwise! In addition to the three fabulous days of riding in a variety of beautiful landscapes, B2BR’09 is all about food and fun and camaraderie.
At meal times, everyone in the camp takes a turn at practicing their skills at the culinary arts, or puts in some KP duty on the dishes. The ride each day (or hike or loaf or escape into town for shopping) is followed by an impromptu happy hour(s), good for rest, relaxation and pontificating on the porch. Perhaps a dip in the ole swimmin' hole or a paddle about the lake with your lady (or gentleman) fair and your ukelele. Dinner follows, then more conversation, consultation and consideration of the challenges of the next day. Some then retire for the night to the cabins, some to their respective tents by the lake. Some, who knows where?
We’re going back for the 32nd time in a row. That says a lot about the ride, the location and the memories we’ve created at the Back to Blueridge weekend. This is a special event full of fun, adventure and a few creature comforts.
Back at spectacular Camp Deepwoods where the water is cold, the air is clear and the Sunday night dance is HOT! Kels has been hosting us all these years with outstanding facilities and nearly endless hot showers.
We’re keeping the things that worked. Our massage therapist will be back and staff up enough to keep everybody loose and ready to roll. The band, some band, a good band will be there for our Sunday night party.
We’re throwing some new things into the mix. This year we are asking SORBA to join us and help us roadies learn an new trick or two. We are inviting a chef to cater our dinners to enhance the relaxation of our time in Deepwoods.
The old routes are waiting and new ones may appear. Get ready to ride at the top of the world!
